Cowboy Mounted Shooting
COWBOY
MOUNTED SHOOTING ASSOCIATION
(CMSA) is one of the nation's fastest growing equestrian sports
in America today. Mounted contestants from all 50 states and
Canada come to compete in this fast-action timed event using
two .45 caliber single action revolvers each loaded with five
rounds of specially prepared black powder blank ammunition.
Up to six courses of fire are set in a variety of patterns.
The first half (five targets) of a course of fire will vary
with each stage and could require the horse and rider to stop,
turn, change leads or accelerate rapidly. The second half
(5 targets), called the "run down," is a straight
course with targets set at 32 foot intervals where riders
engage the targets up to full gallop speeds. An average course
of fire normally takes a contestant between 15 and 35 seconds
to complete. For this competition, up to 6 stages are ran
over 1-2 days and are then totaled to determine a winner in
6 different ability level s.. Adding to the excitement, participants
all dress in authentic turn of the century costume (1860-1890).
Their horses and gear are also consistent with period cowboy
dress.
The first organized Cowboy Mounted Shooting
Competition ever was held at Winter Range in Phoenix, Arizona
the second week of February, 1992. At that time, the entire
association had only 20 members. In only 10 years, the sport
has grown to over 77 clubs in 50 states and now has membership
in excess of 6000. The Rundown Newspaper printed quarterly
goes out to over 10,000 subscribers and members.

Come shoot with us
NIO currently hosts over 20 events each season with
upwards of 20 riders at each event. We always welcome new
riders and host several new shooters clinics to allow our
new comers a chance to get acquainted with this exciting sport.
Currently our club has a broad range of riders so there's
plenty of fun and competition in each CMSA level. Check out
our schedule and come see for yourself
